French Friday: Are the Political Parties Trading Places?

For the first time in decades, the Republican Party has removed all pro-life language from the party platform. Trump has also called for less free-trade, more government regulation, and he is indifferent about Russian aggression in Europe. At the same time, the Democratic Party is embracing patriotism, law and order, tax cuts, and retreating from its more progressive social and environmental policies. What's happening? David French and Skye Jethani discuss the realignment of the parties and whether this is a permanent change or just temporary rhetoric. Plus, French explains why he decided to endorse Kamala Harris after voting for write-in candidates in 2016 and 2020.

As the parent of a non-binary kid (who grew up in the church), I hope the left doesn't back off on issues that keep trans people safe. It sucks that so many people have to have a vested interest before they can imagine a world where you'd want trans people protected. I want everyone to have rights and be safe. And sports is a straw man. It's not prevalent. There's a reason sports are separated and it's not to protect women.

After listening to the end of the pod I realize why I’ve had such a hard time understanding your concern with ‘wokeism’. Answer: you think the online stupidity - twitter, etc - is representative of real life. The democratic candidates in 2019 made that same mistake.

Harris 2024 (and Biden before her) figured out the truth - performative BS on Twitter isn’t real and the vast majority of the anti-Trump coalition is not represented by that nonsense.

It’s the opposite message received by MAGA - Trump and Vance are the personification of online trolls.

I pay a lot more attention to the logic Christians (especially public Christians) use to explain their vote than which of the flawed choices (Harris, Trump, write-in/third party) they choose. Along those lines, I struggle to accept David's argument that defeating Trump will help the pro-life cause. Any other R capable of winning an election will avoid an abortion abolitionist stance for the same reason - it's bad politics. I think the pro-life movement should adopt a state-by-state strategy and focus on changing hearts and minds, not laws, in states that won't electorally support an abortion ban - or at least strong restrictions. As to the election, vote for who will be the best president considering all issues. If you…

Changing hearts and minds is all well and good until the reality of carrying a pregnancy to term when the individual doesn’t have housing, insurance, financial supports etc means she actually can’t safely carry the pregnancy to term. Then what’s the plan? If you are going to “change hearts and minds” will you house the women until they’ve given birth if they lose their housing? Will you employ them if they lose their job or don’t have one? Will you educate them if they get kicked out or can’t continue at their school? The abortion issue is way more complicated for the women than just a matter “wanting” an abortion. There are external factors at work that are related to…

David, we don't agree on everything, and that is OK. I appreciate your integrity and thoughtful commentary.

I'm sure you'll remember the "moral majority" phase of the GOP - how character is the most important thing... I was in a small group at church last Sunday discussing the upcoming election and was gobsmacked (barrowing a Frenchism) by the number of conservatives making the case that it was actually policy that mattered and character wasn't important. My follow up question: "Ok, so what policy are you referring to?" met the room with crickets.
