Episode 461: All Eyes on the SBC & Surviving Gun Violence with Taylor Schumann

Violent crime, including mass shootings, are way up. On average over 300 people are shot everyday in America. In 2013, one of them was Taylor Schumann. She talks with Kaitlyn Schiess about her new book, “When Thoughts and Prayers Aren’t Enough,” and the side of gun violence most of us forget—the survivors.

Also this week, the Southern Baptists are meeting in Nashville where, according to the mainstream media, the entire fate of evangelicalism will be decided. Are they right? Plus, Relevant Magazine wonders if Phil’s mom gave him sound advice about VeggieTales, or was she playing 3-dimensional chess to mess with her son’s theology. And, why a lobster diver will be the illustration in every sermon this Sunday.

Such an important topic covered by a fellow Hokie. I was on campus during the 2007 shootings at VT and will surely share this interview with my classmates. The title reminds me of one of my favorite verses, 1 John 3:18. "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."

Interesting that the question is asked "What is a modern day Nineveh?" As I've posted about Darwinism a few times with this podcast, I've wanted to have a clip to insert of the asparagus saying, "I'm NOT going to Nineveh!"

Sometimes "thoughts and prayers" are called for because ... really, that's all you can do. I doubt that most (or even any) of the policy ideas put forth will do much good. https://time.com/4100408/a-criminologists-case-against-gun-control/

I wish I'd heard this interview (and the earlier one Taylor gave with Esau McCaulley) after my wife and I finished binge-watching the original Leverage. Suddenly, I can't just let the flying bullets go by without considering their implication. Thanks again for a thought- and heart-provoking interview.

(and good move bringing Katelyn in more regularly)

I really enjoy your podcasts and videos! I have shared and referenced them several times. I enjoyed this one too but I found the gun control conversation frustrating. I am neither a Dem or rep. I only identify as a sinner. Taylor spoke to the parallels a little between gun violence and abortion. But then as most Dems did not treat both social economic issues the same. Just like abortion, the conversation should be around education, healthcare and mental health. Just like abortion, passing laws will not help. You have to treat the actual problem. I am fine with fixing loopholes. At this point we need some type of actual federal identification and federal database before background checks can be…
