Episode 431: Can Social Media be Redeemed? with Daniel Darling

Updated: Nov 27, 2020

The CEOs of Facebook and Twitter testified before Congress this week about the toxic spread of misinformation on their platforms and the harm it causes to society. Sadly, many Christians are complicit in this trend.

Daniel Darling is back to talk about how Christians must change the way we engage social media if there’s any hope of redeeming it. Also this week, Trump’s favorite television preachers have made a spectacle of praying for a miraculous election victory, but when does Christian prayer deteriorate into pagan magic? The crew discusses a new study about megachurches, why they’re growing even larger, how fewer are identifying as “evangelical,” and whether the pandemic will cause anyone to rethink the model. Also, Canada experiments with giving money to homeless people, and R.I.P. Sausage King of Russia.

I first saw your video on race and have been an avid listener since. some thoughts on the discussion from this episode: Why don't we want to give handouts to people? For some reason, we [Americans] tend to associate material success with morality (maybe it's tied up in Prosperity Theology -- if God gives material goods for being faithful; then someone who doesn't have material goods must not be faithful? -- Or some such wrong-thinking). I think we need to confront the idea that bad things happen to bad people and good things happen to good people (and the pulpit should be able to help there).

Hey there! I’m an avid listener of the podcast and I enjoy the work the crew does. I just wanted to express my point of view on how the president is spoken about on the show; I’ve been listening for about a year now and I can’t remember the last time Trump hasn’t been mentioned in a negative way on the show. I understand you may disagree with his character and the way he may go abiut certain things but I can’t help but to notice the utter disdain in your voices when you speak about him. Whether you believe he is God sent or not, the Bible instructs is to pray for our leaders in whatever standing they may…

Love the podcast! Just wanted to comment on the idea of giving people $7500 or micro loans here in the US to see the effects. We have a version of that and it works really well. I work for Habitat for Humanity and when we help a family purchase a home with a zero interest mortgage and a lump sum down payment assistance (so, basically a combination of the two concepts referenced), they consistently turn their entire situation around. Kids do better in school. Parents get better jobs. Families that previously needed social services are now giving back and paying property taxes as well. It is an incredibly good investment!
