Episode 419: Rethinking Roe, Crotch Christianity, & Militant Masculinity with Kristin Kobes Du Mez

Is our vision of the ideal Christian man more like Jesus or John Wayne? Historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez talks about the rise of militant masculinity within evangelicalism, how the threat of Communism in the mid twentieth-century led church leaders to deify testosterone, and why we don’t like images of a weak, crucified Jesus.

Also this week, Jerry Falwell’s “pool boy” scandal, John MacArthur says abortion, gay marriage, and transgenderism should determine how Christians vote which leads Skye to explain the difference between “cosmic” and “crotch” Christianity, and Phil unpacks David French’s latest article about why your vote for president will have no impact on abortion. Plus, it’s 130 degrees in Death Valley. What does that mean?

Thanks Phil. Really appreciate you hearing us out.

On another note, I listened to the Unbelievable podcast this past week. It’s put out by the same people who do NT Wright’s podcast, and they played a debate between David French and Eric Metaxas over whether a Christian should vote for Trump (I personally found French far more persuasive). I thought you might be interested:

Hi Matt - You're right... I haven't looked into what Eldridge is up to in a long time, so any criticism lacked sufficient knowledge. Thanks for speaking up!

Hi Skye and Phil,

My wife and I regularly listen to the Holy Post podcast and we have donated to Skye’s ministry and get his daily devotional. We’ve also purchased a year of the Mr. Phil app for our daughter. We are big Buck Denver fans. We’ve been heavily influenced by Dallas Willard and N. T. Wright and appreciate that you and Phil are more concerned with building God’s Kingdom than pushing an American political narrative of Christianity.

I want to let you know that we both have also been heavily influenced by John Eldredge and his ministry, Ransomed Heart which was recently renamed Wild at Heart to gain a broader following. We were dissapointed to hear you speak negatively…

I want to thank Christian Taylor for pressing in on the question of how God might use modern-day catastrophes as a means of speaking to us. The explanation given by Skye and Phil was so helpful to me. I have long had the same questions as Christian but felt generally uncomfortable believing God was using natural events to speak or judge. Now, I have a theologically and biblically sound answer for this issue. Thank you!

Michelle, I totally agree. Christian's voice (no pun intended, haha) is important to me :)
