659: The Root of Racism is Greed Not Hate with Malcolm Foley

After a made-for-T.V. meltdown in the Oval Office between President Trump and President Zelensky of Ukraine, the administration cut all military aid to Ukraine and sided with Russia instead. Will this cause some evangelicals to rethink their support for Trump, and if so where will they go? Two popular Christian books are saying that empathy is manipulative at best, or downright sinful at worst. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn examine their arguments. Most Christians  probably believe that racism is rooted in hate or ignorance, but historian Malcolm Foley says it’s really all about greed. Until we understand the economic origins of racism, he says, the church won’t be equipped to fight it. Also this week—name five things you did last week to justify your existence.

Really appreciated the effort you (particularly Kaitlyn) took on this to get inside the arguments from Rigney and Stuckey. I work in missions in a deeply impoverished northern British town. My work sits at the messy intersection of discipleship and community organizing. I say that to say that anyone who has been on the ground with poor, addicted, or otherwise disadvantaged people knows firsthand about the ways empathy can run you off the rails if it's not held in tension with other values. (I think David French's recent discussion about virtues is helpful here, virtues are found in a balance, too little empathy is calousnes and too much is foolishness).

Emotional manipulation is significant in much charitable giving today. I went to the web page of a christian aid organization looking for facts. I was looking to find how many contracts they had cancelled along with the financial and humanitarian impact of those cancellations. I did not find facts. I did find emotion pulling on my wallet.

Can you point to good sources for the organizations and contracts which were cancelled last week? We know that some of the contracts are for things many of us would likely not support. I believe that those are a small portion of the full set of contracts cancelled, but where can we find the data. I had a conversation with a friend t…
