Has Wheaton College, the flagship of evangelical higher ed, gone woke? Concerned parents and alumni have published a letter accusing the school of valuing diversity more than discipleship. Others have responded by defending Wheaton against the unfounded claims of the MAGA mob. What does the controversy reveal about the state of evangelicalism in the U.S.? A new piece by friend of the show, Karen Swallow Prior, explores the relationship between justice and mercy. Does emphasizing one value more than the other explain the rift in the American church? Derwin Gray is back to discuss his new book, “Lit Up With Love.” He explains how evangelism fits into the bigger narrative of the Bible, and how our reconciliation with God impacts our reconciliation with others. Also this week—North Dakota officially rejects the kingship of Jesus.

Derwin... absolutely love how you walk in the world. Keep it rolling. ...ank
Ok, as a resident of North Dakota, I just have to chime in here --
Lori VanWinkle is apparently known among her ND House colleagues as "Leviticus VanWinkle for her extended, scripture-filled diatribes on the house floor.
One of the main sponsors of this bill is Nico Rios of Williston, ND. He gained notoriety late in 2023 for a homophobic, zenophobic rant when being arrested for drunk driving: https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/24/us/north-dakota-lawmaker-dui-remarks/index.html
Rios also got a vote of no-confidence from his own legislative district after a social media post stating "Wonder if the CIA would help Trump overthrow and kick this Jew out of power in Mexico?" when Sheinbaum spoke out against tariffs: https://www.kxnet.com/news/top-stories/ndgop-decries-rep-nico-rios-anti-semitic-comments/
North Dakota happens to have the distinction of being…
Yes Skye, character is important. My question is why 80-85% of White Evangelicals voted for a thug like Trump for a THIRD time! It made the whole discussion surrounding Justice and Mercy a little hollow.
Yes, while Evangelicals are praying for Wisdom and Blessings for Trump, Trump is making coalitions with War Criminals, and is also willing to commit War Crimes (e.g. remove 2 million Gazans) himself. Again it makes the whole discussion about Mercy/Justice very hollow.
Yes, I heard the 6 million grant being removed for Special Ed Teachers was very difficult. Just wait until Republicans/Evangelicals cut 800-900 million dollars from Medicare. That will cause great suffering for upwards of 70 million challenged and poor Americans. Again the discussion…
By the way, I like the silly chit chat! Often my favorite part of the podcast.
Keep it going!👏🏽😂
I literally just learned yesterday that Poland actually tried the same thing as North Dakota 9 years ago and actually succeeded. I also don't really understand the point of it.
Also the Wheaton thing doesn't really seem like much of a story to me. They retracted a statement, didn't issue any opposing statement, and a particularly vocal group of people pounced on it because that's what they do. Whatever.
