651: The Jimmy Carter Cudgel & Preparing for Mass Deportations with Gabriel Salguero

Former president and born again Christian, Jimmy Carter, died at the age of 100. As the media reflects on his legacy of public service and humanitarianism, some are contrasting Carter’s faith with that of conservative white evangelicals. Esau McCaulley says Carter is being used as a cudgel by progressives to shame their political opponents. Is he right? Skye and Phil unpack two explanations for the country’s rejection of President Carter for Ronald Reagan in 1980. Was Carter too liberal or too humble? Then, pastor and Holy Post Pundit, Gabriel Salguero, is back to talk about a second Trump administration’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, and how Christians and church leaders should hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Also this week—Phil wants to do a telethon for turtles.

Over the years U.S. White Evangelicals have had many issues with Jimmy Carter, but on the other hand they overwhelmingly support a thug like Trump.

Also the conversation with Salguero was slightly confusing. Donald Trump made deporting millions of people the number one 2024 campaign issue. The response was that 80-85% of White evangelicals supported and voted for Trump.

Salguero mentioned the Ccurch should be a "SAFE" place. Uhhhh... not in the White Evangelical church..........................

I haven't heard the segment yet but my initial reaction to the "Jimmy Carter Cudgel" is twofold... If the shillelagh fits, feel it. If "Jimmy Carter" is a "cudgel", he reminds me an awful lot of this sword some dude has comin' out o' his mouth. Hurts but heals every time. Bring it on.

Some of your presidents have worn their faith on their sleeves more than Jimmy did. None of them have come close to living it out like he did. None of them. Any.

Since Kaitlyn joined the podcast, it's sometime difficult for me to listen when she's gone. HOWEVER... Esau is a breath of fresh air and I always look forward to hearing his perspective. I guess I hadn't paid enough attention and am heading right over to subscribe to his podcast and get caught up. Thanks, Esau, for not letting stuff slide and for challenging narratives that aren't helpful or just. Can't wait to hear more!
