635: Slandering Haitians & Parents for Peace in Israel/Palestine with Robi Damelin

Updated: Sep 19

During last week’s presidential debate, Donald Trump amplified a false rumor about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. Since then the community, which was already facing significant challenges, has been shaken by deepening divisions, racism, and even bomb threats. We look at how church leaders in Springfield are responding, what’s really behind the pet-eating lie, and why some of Trump’s Christian supporters are embracing the demonstrably false story. Then, Skye talks with Robi Damelin, an 80-year-old peace activist he met during his recent trip to Israel. Robi’s son was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002, and since then she’s been partnering with grieving parents in both Israel and Palestine to advocate for peace despite growing resistance from leadership in both communities. Also this week—magic Dorito dust makes mice disappear.

Thanks Holy Post for telling the truth about immigrants. I've worked with refugees and immigrants for a long time, and I love the Holy Post for being informed on this issue and encouraging us all to think biblically about it.

I'd like to encourage you, as podcastors, to move away from using the term 'illegal' when you speak of undocumented immigrants. We like to say, "People may be undocumented, but they aren't illegal." An action can be illegal, but not a person. It might not seem like a big deal, but labelling them 'illegal' and using that language to talk about them does paint a certain not-so-positive picture of these people.

Kaitlyn's repeated comparison of the Trump/Vance BS machine to "white lies" is ludicrous! She reaches the right conclusion - lying for any reason is wrong - but it's also wrong to mischaracterize what they are doing. A white lie is "I had eggs for breakfast today" when you really had cereal. Falsely accusing an out group of theft and animal cruelty to terrorize them and stoke your cult base is not a "white lie."

Also, this stupid BS is not "scoring them points." By almost all accounts, they're losing ground and thank God for that!

On an aside, I live in an area with a huge migrant population. Our small city would be decimated without these wonderful, hard-working folks.
