As we start a new academic year, school districts throughout the country are increasingly banning smartphones. No one is more responsible for this trend than Dr. Jonathan Haidt. He talks to Skye about his latest book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” and how smartphones are also interfering with our spiritual lives, and what Christian communities can do about it. Also this week—Donald Trump has completely abandoned the pro-life movement, sending some conservative evangelicals into a political crisis. Chick-Fil-A is launching its own streaming network, but will you be able to watch content on Sundays? And scientists discover Phil’s new favorite deep sea worm.

Jonathan's comments on phones make sense, but I got lost at his opening comments. 55:55: Give kids more after school activities, especially teen sports. My lifelong context: Middle-class mostly white America. I don't have a parent who's not complaining about being overwhelmed by teen sports. I have youth in 3 or 4 different sports at the same time. We have plenty of sports. What we don't have is enough non-sport options. Not everyone plays sports. Even those who do have other interests. If those who do play, 70% drop out of sports by high school because of the unhealthy pressure/competition. Only 7% of those who play in high school go on to play in college. Why is your answer to…
The whole "I'm not a joiner, I'm an observer" bit is disingenuous. Phil, I get it, I'm sure you have friends push back on you for pointing out the GOP has been coopted by satan's sidekick, but you're right in doing so. Skye whining about how it could have been so great to have someone like Mitt Romney win, is utterly worthless. Nearly all the people with any principal and integrity have been brought to heal or jettisoned from the party. This is how democracies die. Well meaning folks give a little, look the other way, and then it's gone.
For everyone else, don't sit there and observe the corruption of our faith and the destruction of our country. Do something.
