629: The Politics of Division with Adam Kinzinger

Donald Trump made headlines last week when he questioned Kamala Harris’s racial identity. Phil, Skye, and Esau McCaulley discuss his comments and how the politics of division often cause us to categorize people into a single box. Then, should Christians embrace the spiritual uses of psychedelic drugs? Megan Basham's new book claims progressive powerbrokers have corrupted evangelical leaders with money, praise, and prestige, but many of her citations are being called into question. Which evangelical leaders are really being seduced by money? Then former Congressman, Adam Kinzinger, sits down with Skye to talk about the relationship between Christianity and the Republican Party, what comes after Trump, and the outsized role of fear in our politics

I should point out that Episcopal clergy ARE priests, and when male, ARE called “Father.”

I understand his point about “being a man” at the end, but it is wrong. What he is talking about is being mature. And I really wish people would stop making maturity into gendered realities. No one is more of any gender/sex reality by behavior. We are, by behavior, illustrating maturity, not gender. When we get that wrong, we enforce the idea that certain behaviors or traits are the purview of a particular gender, not of maturity. It is wrong and we have to stop it if we are going to encourage all Christians toward maturity. Also, Howard Thurman allowed research on LSD in the basement of Boston College chapel once. It didn’t go well, and he didn’t allow it…

Interesting... here's a full account of the experience. Doesn't seem like it went terribly though. The two people interviewed reported that the experience left them feeling like "a better person. More considerate of family and friends." https://maps.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/recollections_of_the_good_friday_experiment.pdf

I think what people like Megan Basham do not get about some of those they criticize is that their targets are working from a completely different paradigm. In Thomas Kuhn’s terms, they are using different methods and assumptions that make cross-paradigm discussions and understandings difficult. Tim Keller, one of Basham’s targets, is a good example. He gave lip service to the importance of political involvement by Christians, but post-conversion, it really wasn’t that important to him. Tim and I collaborated on a research project for a social psychology class in college. We were comparing the 1970 political views of avowed Christians and others. I had a heck of a time getting him to do his part. He had non-Christians and…

Great conversations today, guys. I do feel like in an attempt to appear balanced, you steelman against ideas from the left and softball right-wing extremist ideas somewhat. The MAGA movement will not get less rabid about your perceived enmity of their Trump worship just because you go easy on them and find something to criticize about the Democrats too.

And as always, I could wish you actually took a nuanced view of abortion on air. The Dobbs decision is one of the most evil things ever perpetrated on the American people, and it comes cloaked in the language of religious fervor, yet Phil maintained several episodes ago that he’s really happy with it. (Please, if y'all have taken a more…

Also, I appreciated Esau’s discussion of his article, Skye’s insights, Phil’s dry humor, and I was moved by Adam Kinzinger’s interview. I may not agree with all y’all all of the time (including Adam), but I do appreciate you.
