595: Iowa’s Satanic Panic & Finding Faith Amid Bad Religion with Todd Hunter

The Satanic Temple has been allowed to erect a temporary display in the Iowa State Capitol, provoking some conservative evangelicals to double-down on their commitment to Christian Nationalism, and others to rethink the scope of religious liberty. Kaitlyn responds to an article accusing her, and other authors, of promoting a “loser mindset” among Christians. And are Phil and Skye conspiring with a God-hating Hollywood producer to destroy the church? Then, how do we deal with the unique pain caused by bad church experiences? Bishop Todd Hunter discusses his new book, “What Jesus Intended: Finding True Faith in the Rubble of Bad Religion.”

51:49 -- I don't think "modeling" was ever a career that Kaitlyn felt she would excel in -- but I agree with Phil: you wanna know how to respond to detractors/hateration? Do like Kaitlyn did there. 🎉

That satanic display is kind of festive, actually. It has a disco ball goat head!

Who knew the noted theologian Beck was referring to Christ with the infamous line ”I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me.. “ Too soon? Dude was serving and sacrificing for others like a true sucker.

I think "loser mentality" is cant for "doesn't hold to [some variation on] "seven mountains dominionism", i.e. "isn't a Christian Nationalist" -- wear it with pride, Kaitlyn. wear it with pride.

And that kind of jargon is just as silly in its way as the definition of a "real religion" being promulgated in the case of the "Satanic Temple" display.

I think, in these days the call of God to the church may be best summed up in the chorus of Bruce Cockburn's "Free to Be" (I'm quoting this a lot these days): "Grow up you! Grow up me!"

cheers...ank

Yes. I'm aware that the "Satanic Temple" is naming themselves not as promulgators of evil but as jesters against corrupt religion. I was referring to the definition promulgated to describe what a "real religion" was -- which only affirmed the "jester" nature the ST is trying to display. I think we're on the same page.

The Venn diagram of rabid Dump voters and those upset over a satanic idol is a pair of nearly overlapping circles. The irony, it seems, is lost on them...
