426: Power, Freedom, and Identity with N.T. Wright

The most esteemed New Testament scholar alive today is back on the show! N.T. Wright discusses his new book about John’s gospel, “Broken Signposts.” Wright talks to Skye about two competing visions of power and freedom at work in the world today, and how the church sometimes fails to follow the right one.

He also unpacks how “identity” has become the dominant framework in our culture, how it’s a reaction to colonialism, and the danger it poses to Christian unity. Also this week—Is America having a moral convulsion? David Brooks things so. The gang discusses his new article about what happens when we lose trust in America’s institutions and in one another, and why the church could be the answer. Plus, Phil gets invited to a cookout, Christian wins another award, and Skye’s dog vomits on his sofa.

I have gotten to the 51 minute mark of the Metaxas v. French debate and I don't understand why anybody takes Eric Metaxas seriously. He has no joy. He has only anger. And he has nothing to say but caricaturized right-wing talking points in ways that are completely divorced from their historic context.

He's wrong, too, that "these things are not being heard" -- on the right wing these things are being said and heard widely and often by right-wing propagandists everywhere. I'm starting to blither and this is all 15 weeks ago so pointless. But I'm prepared to leave the bozo bit on Metaxas seriously and permanently flipped.

This is my newest favorite quote for the t-shirt: “Oh, man, our virtual door is covered with theses.”

In all seriousness, thank you all for continuing to make a quality podcast week after week. You’re amazing!

Thanks for linking the debate! It was a lot of fun to listen to. While I do understand the Christian case for voting either side, my favorite part was David's case for rejecting the political binary altogether in 2020. His level analysis of BLM and the alt-right was vitally helpful and powerful.

Also loved the conversation at the start of the podcast! Congratulations to Christian for her awards, Phil for making the list of evangelical heretics, and Skye for defending free thought against knee-jerk cries of "Marxism!" Can't wait to tuck in to the N.T. Wright interview. Thanks for everything.
